The Arts & Culture Working Group of The San Diego Foundation has released a new research report regarding cultural participation in the region. "pARTicipate San Diego - The Case for Increased Cultural Patronage" is the first research report in a series of "Understanding the San Diego Region" reports. The report emphasizes the vital role of arts and culture in our region. Click here for more information.
Victoria Hamilton, Executive Director of the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, was highlighted in the Union-Tribune for being elected president of the United States Urban Arts Federation, an alliance of local arts agencies in the nation's 50 largest cities. The member organizations use the arts to address social, educational, and economic development issues, and work collaboratively with other local government depts and community agencies. Hamilton has headed the arts commission since it was created in 1988. The agency's main task is to oversee the allocation of the city's annual financial support of more than 80 local arts organizations. That money is generated by the city's hotel-motel room tax.
The Fieldstone Foundation has been very visible lately! Fieldstone built the home on the April 9 episode of ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition, and the Foundation is featured as a pioneer in the field of nurturing organizational leadership in the GEO publication "Investing in Leadership Volume 2: Inspiration and Ideas from Philanthropy's Latest Frontier." The guide discusses the way in which Fieldstone has made leadership development a cornerstone of its mission, including Executive Learning Groups and other programs. Mary Lewis, the former Vice President, COO of Alliance Healthcare Foundation, is now working in the Mayor's Office, as Director of Financial Management.

CA Foundations Fund Stem Cell Research
From the SF Business Times: A group of foundations and other organizations have committed $14 million to set in motion California's funding of stem cell research -- an effort that so far has been stymied by litigation. The six organizations agreed to purchase so-called bond anticipation notes to fund scientific and research grants administered by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine as a bridge to carry the institute until it can issue general obligation bonds through the state. The voter-created institution is charged with overseeing the disbursement of $3 billion to fund stem cell research in California, but efforts to sell state-backed bonds to fund its grants have been blocked by lawsuits that challenge the constitutionality of the institute's activity. The litigation is expected to conclude next spring. Click here for the rest of the article.
UCSD Student Foundation in the News
The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently featured UCSD's student-run foundation in the article "Turning College Students Into Lifelong Philanthropists," by Maria Di Mento.
"Getting college students to become lifelong donors is a challenge for many colleges and universities. At the University of California at San Diego, officials decided that giving students a chance to raise, invest, and distribute charitable funds would help make them loyal donors to their alma mater, as well as to other causes. Early signs show their hunch is working.
In 1999, the California institution raised $100,000 from Marc Brutten, the founder and chairman of Westcore Properties, a real-estate investment firm in San Diego, and his wife, Patricia, both alumni of the university, to create the UCSD Student Foundation as a subsidiary of the campus's fund-raising arm. Students run the entire operation, which mostly channels money to scholarships." Chronicle subscribers: Click here for more of the article (log-in required).
Panel on the Nonprofit Sector Releases Supplemental Report

Guide: Mapping Change
Grantmakers commonly ask themselves and grantees why their activities will make a difference and if they’re being effective. The new GrantCraft guide, Mapping Change: Using a Theory of Change to Guide Planning and Evaluation, explains why grantmakers use theories of change to guide their questioning, unearth assumptions underlying their work, establish common language and develop strong action plans. The guide also describes how using a theory of change sets the stage for evaluation by clarifying goals, strategies and milestones. Click here to find out more or download the guide.
Donors of the Future: New Resource
New Ventures in Philanthropy Initiative of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers has recently unveiled the new Donors of the Future Online Knowledge Center, available on the Forum's Web site. The Center includes information regarding:
Trends: which explain the cultural and demographic shifts that are influencing the donors of today and tomorrow
Resources: which provide insight into these specific donors, vehicles, and their motives
Mapping Tools: which put your state and locality in context with the rest of the country and can show how these trends will impact you and your community.
