SDG Guiding Principles Launch

Join us for this month's Third Thursday Breakfast Series event:

Third Thursday

May 17, 2007
8:30-10:30am
Location: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 1100 Kettner Blvd, San Diego 92101

Facilitator: Martin Taylor, Vice President, Institute for Global Ethics

There is a lot of talk about ethics these days – for corporations, nonprofits, and foundations. Grantmakers of every type are called upon to be accountable and transparent.  But what does that really mean and how should we do it? Join us for the launch of the SDG Guiding Principles Project. Our partner is the Institute for Global Ethics, whose mission is to promote ethical behavior in individuals, institutions, and nations through research, public discourse, and practical action. Martin will facilitate— helping us explore and identify how to proactively turn funder values into action.

This launch will generate ideas for our SDG Guiding Principles Task Force, which will be chaired by Tim McCarthy of the McCarthy Family Foundation. The first meeting of the Task Force will take place on May 31 from 8:30-10:30 am at AMN Healthcare. Please email Nancy if you would like to be a part of this working group!

Thank You to our Sponsors:
The California Endowment, Jacobs Family Foundation,
Jewish Community Foundation, McCarthy Family Foundation,
Parker Foundation, Union Bank of California Foundation,
and Washington Mutual.

To RSVP, call 619/744.2180 or email programs@sdgrantmakers.org

AMN Healthcare, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and Sempra Energy have all been nominated for the 2007 Athena Pinnacle Awards, Corporate. Athena Pinnacle Awards are presented annually to individuals and organizations that, through the development and promotion of skilled and talented women, have had a significant impact within the San Diego technology, life science and healthcare sector.

The American Diabetes Association, as a member of the Combined Health Agencies (CHA), has selected Amylin Pharmaceuticals as its 2007 Health Hero.  The CHA annual Health Hero Awards honor local businesses, medical professionals and media personalities for their contributions, dedication and commitment to better health for all San Diegans.

The Hitachi Foundation's 2006 annual report is available.

Anne McEnany has left the full-time staff of the International Community Foundation because of a relocation to Michigan.

The Jacobs Family Foundation was featured in a Wall Street Journal article about the issue of family foundation perpetuity vs. sunsetting.

The James Irvine Foundation and partner foundations funded new research showing that raising the quality of education and student achievement in California will require major reforms. The $3 million research project finds that more funding and small, incremental interventions are unlikely to make a difference unless matched with a commitment to wholesale reform. Click here (pdf) for more information. Irvine Foundation's CEO, Jim Canales, was featured in a cover photograph and article in the April 5 issue of the Chronicle of Philanthropy that relates to foundations becoming more open about learning from their mistakes.

The Jewish Community Foundation announced the addition of two new positions to help the Foundation advance to the next level in promoting philanthropy. Julie Bronstein joins the Foundation as Director of Business Development and Emily Jennewein becomes Director of Marketing and Communications.

The San Diego Foundation has released its 2006 annual report.

Washington Mutual announced a new partnership with The National Arbor Day Foundation to help replant America's national forests. In conjunction with its year-long Make A Statement, Plant A Tree campaign, WaMu will make a donation to the Foundation to plant a tree in a national forest for every customer who chooses to receive their account statements online rather than being mailed a paper statement.

Wells Fargo has released its second annual Corporate Citizenship Report, "One Team. Pulling Together. For Communities." Click here to download the report.

Expenditure Responsibility Resources

This month, Alliance Healthcare Foundation sponsored an excellent program on the topic of "Expenditure Responsibility Grants and Grantee Bylaws" with guest speaker Rosemary E. Fei of Silk, Adler & Colvin. For those of you unable to attend, we have posted materials from the program on the SDG website in the members-only section (contact Nancy if you need login info). Click here for the link to the materials, which include a primer on expenditure responsibility, a comparison of structural options for nonprofit corporate governance, and sample bylaws.

Corporate Citizenship Awards Nominations

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Business Civic Leadership Center invites nominations for corporate citizenship awards. BCLC's Corporate Citizenship Awards showcase businesses, trade associations, chambers of commerce, and partner organizations for demonstrating ethical leadership and corporate stewardship and for making a positive difference in society. Nominations will be accepted until June 29, 2007. The awards will be presented on November 7, 2007 in Washington, DC. Click here for more information on how to nominate companies.

COF Launches Legislative Initiative

COF has launched a new legislative initiative, the 2007 Agenda for Philanthropic Partnership, in order to promote the growth of philanthropy by partnering with government. The effort includes five key objectives, to be advanced as separate initiatives rather than as part of a comprehensive bill:

  1. Improve the Donor-advised Fund, Supporting Organization Reforms in the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA)
  2. Expand and Permanently Extend the IRA Charitable Rollover Incentive
  3. Simplify the Private Foundation Excise Tax on Net Investment Income
  4. Propose to Establish Low-profit Limited Liability Companies (L3C) so that foundations can make program-related investments to them
  5. Extend the Deductions for Contributions of Qualified Conservation Property

Click here for a more detailed view of these initiatives. COF will also be providing an online tool to make it easier for philanthropic leaders to contact members of Congress.

More Philanthropic Headlines

Wall Street Journal on "The Charity Gap"
On April 4, WSJ featured an opinion piece by Sheryl Sandberg of Google that discussed the "disconnect between Americans' philanthropic aspirations and their charitable giving." Sandberg highlighted the twin facts of public desire to help those less fortunate and donations that do not target disadvantaged populations, as found by a study that Google commissioned the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University to conduct.

IRS Urged to Increase Education for Foundations, Nonprofits
The IRS is focusing too much attention on compliance issues involving foundations and other nonprofits and not enough on increasing the federal tax agency ’s education and outreach efforts, according to U.S. IRS Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson. Click here for more info from the Council of Michigan Foundations. Meanwhile, Independent Sector is calling on Congress to increase the IRS budget to enable the agency to provide greater oversight of the sector and offer improved resources designed to educate nonprofits about new and existing tax laws (click here for the full article).

Volunteering
Independent Sector has announced that the value of a volunteer hour in 2006 reached $18.77 per hour, up from $18.04, or 4 percent, in 2005. Click here for more info. However, a Corporation for National and Community Service report found that the number of Americans donating their time dropped to about 61 million last year, the lowest number since 2002.

VA Tech Memorial Funds Established

In the aftermath of the Virginia Tech tragedy, nonprofit groups and community foundations have created new funds and engaged in other efforts to help victims and their families, sustain the individuals and organizations assisting them, and ensure campus security throughout the state, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. FUNDRAISING STIPULATION:  SDG was developed with grantmakers (staff and trustees) in mind so they could talk candidly with their peers about the challenges they face.  With that in mind, we wish to impress upon members and potential members that fundraising or marketing is not allowed at any of SDG’s programs, meetings, or other events.
