History, values, and communications have helped to steward and engage multiple generations of the Rockefeller family in philanthropy. This documentary explores how the family has sustained its giving over 120 years and how it has transmitted its values and views to support its philanthropy. What can philanthropists of all sizes learn from the great legacy of the Rockefeller family? This session will provide us with insight into the family story that initiated and sustained this legacy across generations. We will hear personal stories about the successes and challenges of the Rockefeller family's philanthropy and we will have time to engage in a conversation with the speakers.

Philanthropic Headlines

Washington Times commentary:  "Philanthropy Threatened"
This article responds to the the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy report "Philanthropy at its Best."  On April 27, SDG members participated in a statewide webinar to discuss the report with NCRP's President Aaron Dorfman and grantmakers from around California.  If you missed it, you can download a pdf of the presentation. The debate continues:  check out this issue of COF's journal Thought>Action>Impact, which is dedicated to discussing the guidelines suggested by NCRP.

Foundation Center:  "Close to Two-thirds of Foundations Expect to Reduce Their Grants in 2009"
According to Foundations Address the Impact of the Economic Crisis (pdf), organizations seeking new sources of support and recently established entities will be especially challenged in securing foundation funding. The report is based on 2009 survey responses of more than 1,200 U.S. foundations.

PND:  "More Family Foundations Transferring Assets to Donor-Advised Funds"
Frustrated by the upkeep, time commitment, and costs involved, more and more philanthropists are closing their family foundations and transferring the assets into donor-advised funds, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Philanthropy Journal:  "Economy Seen Affecting Proxy Votes"
With the recession lingering, finance-related issues are topping the list of concerns facing corporations during the 2009 proxy-voting season, a new report says. As the more than 75,000 private U.S. foundations, which together hold more than $550 billion in assets, contemplate how to invest their endowments, the Proxy Preview 2009 from Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (pdf)offers guidelines.
News from Washington

IRA Rollover Act
On March 2, Representatives Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) and Wally Herger (R-CA) introduced the Public Good IRA Rollover Act of 2009 in the House (H.R. 1250). Senators Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) introduced a companion IRA rollover bill in the Senate, S. 864 on April 22. If enacted, this legislation would permanently allow gifts made to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, and private foundations to qualify for the IRA charitable rollover. The bill would also lift the $100,000 cap on distributions and allow planned gifts beginning at age 59 1/2. The Council on Foundations strongly supports this legislation (read COF's issue paper) and is encouraging grantmakers to contact their congressmembers.

Estate Tax

From Independent Sector:  The House Budget Resolution that passed on April 2 calls for the permanent extension of the estate tax at the 2009 levels. The 2009 parameters include a $3.5 million exemption for individuals ($7 million for couples) and a tax rate of 45 percent.
The status of estate tax reform in the Senate is confused due to the adoption of conflicting amendments as part of the budget resolution debate on April 2. The conflicting amendments must be resolved when the bill goes to conference with the House.  Click here for more from Independent Sector on the Estate Tax proposals, and see also this San Francisco Chronicle article on the proposals.

Excise Tax
From COF:  On Tuesday, March 24, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) introduced a private foundation excise tax bill (S.676). This proposal would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to modify and simplify the excise tax on the investment income that private foundations pay. S.676 would remove the current two-tiered excise tax imposed on private foundations and replace it with one flat rate. For more:  COF on the private foundation excise tax bill (S.676), and read the issue paper.

Office of Social Innovation
