The December 2007 issue of San Diego Metropolitan includes an article about corporate philanthropy, "Corporate Giving Benefits Both Donors and Recipients." The article (which is meant to give advice to companies considering corporate giving) features SDG's own Executive Director Nancy Jamison, United Way CEO and SDG Board Treasurer Doug Sawyer, as well as Cox Communications, The San Diego Foundation, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and Sempra Energy. BCCCC: Report on Mid-Level Managers Leading Corporate Citizenship
Much has been written about top-down leadership and leaders who follow. But what about those who lead from the middle? Researchers from the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship went inside eight companies and discovered it is often mid-level managers who lead efforts to integrate corporate citizenship. Corporate Philanthropy Goes Global: Foundation Center, Philanthropy News Digest
This article reports on the trend in corporate philanthropy to give globally. The share of U.S. corporate charitable giving to international causes jumped 44 percent from 2004 to 2006, according to a survey conducted this year by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. And international contributions in 2006 totaled more than $2 billion, according to the Conference Board.
Small Companies Put Charity Into Their Business Plan: Wall Street Journal
This article reports that it can be difficult for small businesses to be philanthropic from the start, but that short-term financial burdens can turn into long-term benefits like consumer and employee loyalty.

Corporate Arts Support Dips: Philanthropy Journal, Dec. 2007
While American businesses gave a hefty $3.16 billion to arts organizations last year, that's a drop of 5 percent from 2003, a new study says. Overall, the number of companies donating to the arts grew 6 percent from 2003 to 2006, but that gain was offset by a drop in the share of small businesses that contributed, says the report by the Business Committee for the Arts.

Corporate Philanthropy in Silicon Valley
This report by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation includes the findings of their survey on corporate giving (giving there is on par with other communities) and makes suggestions for how companies can encourage even greater levels of giving. BusinessWeek: How Companies Dig Deep
BusinessWeek surveyed companies in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index to find out which companies were the most generous givers for fiscal year 2006, for both cash and "in-kind" donations. Click here for the chart.
Food for Thought: Embedded Giving
Embedded giving--the practice of companies including a charitable donation in the purchase price of items--has been the subject of some controversy. Click here for a Chronicle of Philanthropy article on embedded giving, which quotes philanthropy blogger Lucy Bernholz. Bernholz has been critical of embedded giving in her blog: click here. Bernholz points out that we don't know much about how embedded giving is counted in overall philanthropy totals, and that perhaps embedded giving is marketing, not giving at all.
