Diversity in Philanthropy Research Project
Watch your email and mailboxes! All SDG members will be receiving a letter regarding the Diversity in Philanthropy research project being conducted in a collaborative effort between the regional associations of grantmakers in California, the Foundation Center, and academic partners. The project intends to collect and analyze data on philanthropic giving to diverse communities throughout the state. The regional associations of grantmakers in California have initiated this project to grasp a broader understanding of the multitude of ways we can strengthen giving and service to communities in need. It is also hoped that this information will help capture the landscape of our peers’ efforts towards diversity-related approaches and provide knowledge to interested audiences, including California legislators who have recently been engaged in this issue. Please be assured that the data you provide will be kept confidential and presented only in an aggregated format.

Washington Report
Foundations on the Hill
Since congressional interest in our sector is not lessening, your participation in Foundations on the Hill (March 4-5, 2008) is more important than ever! Rep. John Lewis, chair of the House Ways and Means Oversight subcommittee, advised us to get to know our elected officials and their staffers better. We need to be intentional in educating members of Congress about the good work we do in their communities. Please consider sending someone from your foundation to D.C. this year. This time on the Hill is vital to our ability to head off legislation that may negatively impact the sector. If you or someone from your foundation will be able to join us, please let Nancy know.
Senate to Consider Embedded Giving Programs
From PND: The practice of building a charitable gift into everyday purchases, sometimes called embedded giving, has attracted the interest of Congress, the New York Times reports. Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) said he will introduce legislation that, if passed, would require retailers to notify charities when their names are being used in sales promotions and disclose how much they are actually turning over to charity; it will also require charities' approval of the practice.

IRS Unveils Updated Form 990
The Internal Revenue Service unveiled its updated Form 990 on December 20. The revised Form, which most charities will be required to file annually, includes many of the elements that appeared in the draft version, including a core form and a series of schedules. However, in response to widespread comments from the charitable community and its advisors, the IRS has substantially changed the design and many elements of the Form and the schedules. The IRS announced it will phase in implementation of the new form over four years to allow smaller organizations to prepare for new requirements. Click here for more information from Independent Sector.
Congress Passes AMT Relief - IRA Rollover Not Included
From COF: On December 19, Congress passed a one-year alternative minimum tax (AMT) “patch” that will prevent the AMT from hitting millions of middle-class taxpayers. The bill does not extend the IRA charitable rollover or other tax incentives that will expire on December 31, 2007. Even though the IRA charitable rollover was not extended, congressional leaders recognize that it is an important charitable giving tool and they expect to enact retroactive relief early in the next legislative session.

Giving Studies
Long-Term Study on Giving
About six in 10 U.S. households contribute to charity routinely, according to new findings from the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study (COPPS) released recently by the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. The study found that a fairly large proportion of all U.S. households – nearly one-third – shift between donating and not donating. The average total amount given by the households was just over $2,000 per year. Other interesting results include:
- Households with incomes of $100,000 or more give a lower percentage of their income on average (2.2% of income) than do those with incomes under $50,000, who give 4.2% of their income.
- However, higher-income households are more likely to give: 93% of higher-income households reported donations of $25 or more to charity, compared to 56% of lower-income households.
The study has received media coverage from The Washington Post, Bloomberg, and PND, among others.
Portraits of Donors
Portraits of Donors (pdf) is a new report that reveals specific behavioral patterns and motivations of the nation’s wealthy and ultra-wealthy donors. The report is based on data from the 2006 Bank of America Study of High Net-Worth Philanthropy, the most in-depth quantitative study ever conducted of the wealthiest 3.1% of U.S. households. The original study revealed that wealthy donors possess very different philanthropic traits when compared to the general U.S. population. In response to high levels of interest in the original study from non-profit strategists and donors, Bank of America has delivered on its promise to provide a more in-depth analysis of its findings.
