SD Grantmakers Update

  February 2008

"To give away money is an easy matter and in any man’s power.  But to decide to whom to give it and how much and when, for what purpose and how, is neither in every man’s power, nor an easy matter."--Aristotle

We recently announced 2008's Thursdays with SDG monthly program series. Building upon the success of last year’s series, we are offering a wide range of topics to meet the varying interests of our membership. Please take a few minutes to read about the individual programs and mark your calendars! Additional SDG sessions are in the works and we will be announcing more learning and networking opportunities very soon. Click here for the full listing of Thursdays with SDG programs.

Member & Community Partner News

YOUR ORGANIZATION COULD BE FEATURED HERE! Don't forget to let SDG know what's new with you, from grantmaking to awards, events, and more. We want to share the good news about all of our members. To submit an item for the newsletter, email nancy@sdgrantmakers.org.

SDG is hiring! San Diego Grantmakers is currently seeking to hire for two positions: an Administrative Coordinator and a Funder Collaboration Consultant. Click here for links to the position descriptions--please pass them along to any qualified candidates.

Additionally: San Diego National Bank has generously provided in-kind space for SDG in the University Town Center area. However, since San Diego Grantmakers' staff is growing, we are looking for larger office space. If you have some ideas about where we could find either donated, subsidized, or below market-rate offices and would like to hear more about our specific needs, please contact Executive Director Nancy Jamison at  nancy@sdgrantmakers.org or 619-744-2180.

This week a small group of SDG members went to see a new play in town, "Permanent Collection," presented by the Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company.  We all agreed that it was not only an excellent production, but also one that raises important issues about donor intent, legacy, race, representation, and the role of the media. There is still time to see it on your own--for more information, click here.

The Alliance Healthcare Foundation Board of Trustees has approved grants totaling $3,833,104 to programs across all three of the Foundation’s funding priority areas: access to healthcare, community health and mental health.

The California Council for the Humanities announced that Ralph Lewin will become the organization's new executive director, assuming the position on March 10, 2008. Lewin replaces current Executive Director James D. Quay, who will retire in March after 25 years of service. Click here for more information.

Community Technology Foundation has changed its name to ZeroDivide, to reflect its work towards improving access to technology.

Thank you to Invitrogen Foundation for bringing Deputy General Counsel Andrew Schulz of COF to town on February 13 for an informal lunch meeting and roundtable discussion on issues relating to legislative trends, governance, legal requirements, and ethics.

The James Irvine Foundation is featured in this Financial Times article that details a "wider trend by the [philanthropic] sector to become more open and innovative in the way it approaches making grants."

Jan Tuttleman of the Jewish Community Foundation was recently awarded the Anne Ratner Award for Extraordinary Leadership by the United Jewish Federation (UJF) of San Diego County. Click here for more information.

Gail Littman and Marissa Garfield of the Jewish Community Foundation will speak about youth and philanthropy on March 5 at the UC San Diego Student Foundation’s Annual IPledge Reception, which recognizes students, faculty, and staff who have made contributions to the foundation’s IPledge campaign for student scholarships.

The Legler Benbough Foundation, The Parker Foundation, and The San Diego Foundation were lauded for funding a study of Balboa Park needs in this Union-Tribune article. Also, click here for a link to the report on Balboa Park.

Tim McCarthy of the McCarthy Family Foundation will speak at the North County Philanthropy Council's luncheon program on Emergency Preparedness on February 29, 2008.

The San Diego Foundation's 2007 Annual Report is now available: click here to view online or download.

Diversity in Philanthropy

In 2007, California State Assemblymember Joe Coto, Democrat from the 23rd District and Chair of the Latino Legislative Caucus, introduced AB 624, which would require private, corporate, and public foundations with assets over $250 million to track and disclose diversity-related data (race, gender and sexual orientation) of their boards, staff, nonprofit grantees, business contracts and their clients served through grants. The three California Regional Associations of Grantmakers have taken an opposition stand to this bill as have a number of foundations and other entities. Click here for more information and links to articles, research, opinion pieces and more (SDG member log-in required).

Fire Response Update

On January 31, grantmakers met to discuss The San Diego Foundation's Community Needs Assessment Report. Click here for the power point presentation from this meeting, which has information on the Long Term Recovery Teams and Community Recovery Teams that were formed to address ongoing needs for fire victims in the areas impacted by the fires. There is also a short list of the highest priority ongoing needs.  For more information, contact Jeff Wieman at The San Diego Foundation at (619) 235-2300, or click here.

Again, don't forget to let SDG know about any fire-related giving you are continuing to do, so that we can keep track of member activity in this area. Click here for SDG's fire response webpage.

Corporate Philanthropy Continues to Rise, Survey Finds
"Total corporate contributions in the United States and abroad amounted to $10.2 billion in 2006, up from $9.8 billion in 2005, a new report from the New York City-based Conference Board finds."

New York Times: Here's My Check; Spend It All at Once
"The gift horse could use a good dentist after all. When the American Red Cross said last week that a $200 million deficit would force it to make deep cuts in the headquarters staff, the charitable world detected evidence of one of its most vexing trends: the growing tyranny of donors. For about the last decade, charity experts say, donors have increasingly earmarked their charitable gifts, requiring recipients to spend the money exactly as prescribed."

Wall Street Journal: Get in the Giving Habit
"You can't be a big-ticket philanthropist on an entry-level salary. But that doesn't mean cash-strapped twentysomethings can't manage some giving to worthy causes. Just start small, get in the giving habit -- and donate your time if dollars aren't an option."

New York Times: Charity Begins in Washington
"The munificence of American corporate titans warms the heart, sort of. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that the top 50 donors gave $7.3 billion to charity last year — about $150 million per head. Excluding Warren Buffett’s $43.5 billion burst of generosity in 2006, last year’s giving easily beat the record set the year before. This is great news for many worthy causes....Yet we’d be so much happier about all the good things America’s moneyed elite pay for if the government made needed public investments." Grants Manager Salary Survey
The Grants Managers Network (GMN) has released its 2007 Salary Survey.  This biennial survey is designed to provide members and foundation leaders with a current and accurate analysis of compensation and benefits in the grants management profession.  Among the key findings for 2007: Average salary of $63,600 and median of $60,000 nationwide.  In Los Angeles and New York, average salaries were $75,800 and $74,000, respectively. New Journal: The Foundation Review
The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University will begin publication of a new peer-reviewed journal for philanthropy, The Foundation Review, in late 2008.  The target audience is foundation professionals involved in grant-making and others who are interested in learning the results of foundation-funded programs.  The Foundation Review will be a quarterly journal, with each year emphasizing an overall theme and each issue focused on a particular topic within that theme. Contact Teri Behrens, Editor of The Foundation Review, with questions: behrenst@gvsu.edu or 734.646.2874.

New GEO Report: Imagine, Involve, Implement
Findings from Phase 2 of GEO’s Change Agent project that outline and examine the necessary steps to change the approach of grantmakers and their organizations. A compilation and analysis of 25 interviews, which draw conclusions and synthesize them in four crucial steps for grantmakers looking to transform their practices. Click here to download the report.

FSG Guide to Mission Investment Intermediaries
This report from FSG Social Impact Partners focuses on intermediaries - ranging from community development finance institutions to screened equity funds and venture capital firms – that raise and invest capital with the intention of achieving both social impact and financial returns. This report concludes that mission investment intermediaries are an effective but greatly under-utilized vehicle for funders to achieve both social and financial returns. In addition, the authors found that intermediaries can provide management support, tax credits, and access to a much larger pool of capital that can greatly leverage a funder's investment. Report: What Drives Foundation Expenses and Compensation? Results of a Three-Year Study
Foundation type, size, staffing patterns, and operating activities are the key factors that consistently drive foundation expense and compensation patterns, a new report from the Urban Institute, the Foundation Center, and GuideStar finds. Moreover, even under changing or volatile economic conditions, the administrative expense and compensation patterns of U.S. foundations are consistent and predictable. Click here (pdf) to download the report.

Report: Businesses See Opportunity in CSR
Many companies believe that including social responsibility as a core principle of their business strategy makes them more competitive, gives them access to new business opportunities, and helps them attract and retain the best talent, a new study by the IBM Institute for Business Value finds.
The report, Attaining Sustainable Growth Through Corporate Social Responsibility (pdf), found that 68 percent of the senior executives surveyed look to CSR activities as a way to generate revenue, while 54 percent believe that CSR initiatives give their company a competitive advantage. mbr login FUNDRAISING STIPULATION
SDG was developed so that grantmakers (staff and trustees) could talk candidly with their peers about the challenges they face.  With that in mind, we wish to impress upon members and potential members that fundraising or marketing is not allowed at any of SDG’s programs, meetings, or other events.
