What the New Economic Stimulus Package Means for
California Grantmakers
Monday, March 2, 11:00 a.m. -
12 noon
As the largest state economy in
the nation, California
is key in the efforts to turn the current
economic crisis around. Our legislature has just reached a deal
to close the state's $42 billion budget gap which will involve massive
cuts in spending for programs that are vital to our communities.
Now they will need to decide how to spend the funds that will be coming
to California
through the massive economic stimulus package recently signed into law
by President Obama. What do California grantmakers need to know
NOW about these new developments and what will they mean for your work
and your grantees?
Diana Aviv,
president and CEO of Independent Sector, and her senior vice
president for public policy, Pat
Read, will share the latest developments from
Washington and strategies that will help California grantmakers in the
difficult work that lies ahead. Independent Sector is the
national leadership coalition for foundations, nonprofits and corporate
giving programs and is seen as a leading voice for the nonprofit
community on Capitol Hill.
RSVPs REQUIRED:
programs@sdgrantmakers.org
by 12:00noon on Friday,
February 27, 2009! Details on how to access the
webinar will be sent in your confirmation.

Trying to
Integrate Corporate Citizenship? Consider Competency Models
"For many companies the
major challenge of corporate citizenship is how to integrate its themes

citizenship should be an integral part of everyone's job in the
company. This is easy to say, but often difficult to
achieve." See this Boston College
article on applying competency models to corporate
citizenship.

Philanthropy & Policy Makers
SDG has had a series of meetings with local policy
makers as a result of our publication of The Grantmaking Report: Foundation and Corporate
Giving in San Diego County. These meetings have made clear
the importance of educating government leaders about our sector.
In that spirit, we hope you will join us for Foundations on the Hill, March 24-25,
2009. SDG Executive Director Nancy Jamison and
Public Policy Chair Sid Voorakkara will be attending! During Foundations on the Hill, foundation
trustees, executives and staff, working with their regional association
(SDG), schedule meetings on Capitol Hill to personally discuss their
work with members of Congress. In addition to congressional meetings,
participants will hear from senior representatives from the Obama
administration and the House
Ways and Means and Senate Finance
committees, as well as attend training sessions and a breakfast event
featuring remarks by a members of Congress.
The purpose is to:
- Inform and educate
Congress about philanthropy
- Create visibility for
foundations and philanthropy on Capitol Hill
- Advocate on issues
affecting foundations
- Encourage Congress to
view foundations as resources on key public policy issues
In
other Congressional news, Rep. John Lewis and Rep. Patrick Tiberi
are the new co-chairs of the Congressional Philanthropy Caucus. Click here for details. Locally, Reps.
Susan Davis and Bob Filner are caucus members.
On February 11, the SDG Homelessness Working Group hosted

and discuss the growing concerns of families facing homelessness in our
region. The summit was held in conjunction with the National
Alliance on Ending Homelessness Annual Conference on Family Homelessness.
Mayors and staff from city, county, state and national legislative
offices joined SDG members and representatives from national
foundations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the
Melville Charitable Trust.

Philanthropic Headlines
New York Times: In Uncertain
Times, Donors Hold Back
"Charitably inclined
people are anxious. Charities, like businesses and families, have
suffered in the economic maelstrom, while their services are needed
more than ever. But donors fear they can no longer afford to give as
much as they once did."
Chronicle:
Charities Merge
at Almost the Same Rate as Businesses
"Charity leaders are
looking at mergers and acquisitions as a potential strategy to ride out
the turbulent economy, according to a new survey....A related study
found that nonprofit organizations merge at almost the same rate as for-profit
businesses do." This article relates to SDG's event with David
LaPiana on strategic restructuring: click here (pdf) for the
program materials.
Pablo Eisenberg
in Chronicle of Philanthropy: Now's the Time to Push for Changes in How
Foundations Operate
"In these troubled times,
it is important for nonprofit groups, enlightened foundation
executives, and members of the Obama administration and the public to
push for needed changes in a more comprehensive manner. To improve
foundation responsiveness to today's needs will take legislative and
regulatory changes, as well as efforts by foundations themselves to
improve their performance." Eisenberg argues for
increased payout requirements, limits on trustee fees, foundation size
limits, and several other provocative recommendations. This
article is available to Chronicle subscribers, but Eisenberg published
a related article in
Philanthropy Journal about how foundations should help
bail out nonprofits. Todd Cohen adds to Eisenberg's argument in
this blog post.
International
Business News: In Tough Times, It's Time to Step Up
"With markets gyrating,
companies disappearing, and wealth vanishing down the Madoff
rabbit-hole, some nonprofits are holding their breath, others cutting
staff and postponing building plans, still others closing their doors.
And in this perfect storm, while the working poor lose jobs and health
insurance, and vital social services are needed more than ever,
philanthropy must be strengthened."
Newsweek:
Death of a Dream
This article by 2008 SDG Annual
Conference speaker Joel
Kotkin outlines economic and political problems facing California.
Philanthropy
Journal: Litz Tapped to
Head Funders Network
"A technology and
nonprofit-sector veteran will become the new president and CEO of the
Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers next month. Michael Litz
joins the Arlington, Va.-based organization March 1."
