SDG Members Form EPIP Chapter in San Diego
In the fall of 2007, a small group of young professionals
began to explore the idea of a San Diego chapter of the national
organization Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy
(EPIP). Realizing that San Diego lacked a dedicated space for the
professional development and networking of philanthropic young people, Julieta Mendez of the
International Community Foundation, Christiana DeBenedict and Michelle Jaramillo of the
US-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership, and Marissa Garfield of the Jewish
Community Foundation, set off on a year-long discovery process to
determine the potential demand, role, impact and viability of a
chapter. By fall 2008, the steering committee had developed a
strong vision for EPIP San Diego: a chapter that offers member-driven
programming, meeting often and informally to nurture inter-personal
relationships with programming focused on keeping our finger on the
pulse (current events/media), moving forward on our career path
(professional development) and staying in touch with our community
(networking/partnerships). Jennifer Temple of the
Gary and Mary West Foundation has joined the core leadership, working
with several other committed members to plan events and raise the
chapter's visibility. For more information, contact Michelle Jaramillo.

Philanthropic Headlines
San Diego Union-Tribune "Cities Look to Partners for Help"
San Diego has a 26-foot
surf rescue boat, two fire and rescue helicopters, lifeguard training
videos - and millions of dollars of operating funds - all thanks to corporate
partners.
WSJ: "Charity
Rankings Giveth Less Than Meets the Eye" It may make
you feel better to know that your charitable donations are going to
organizations that have been highly rated by any number of online
charity rankings. But these sites fail to quantify the most-important
and most elusive charity measurement: success in achieving its mission.
Bill Gates
2009 Annual Letter: "The Role of Foundations"
"Foundations are unusual
because they don't have to worry about being voted out at the next
election or board meeting....Another way that running a foundation is
not like running a business is that you don't have customers who beat
you up when you get things wrong or competitors who work to take those
customers away from you. You don't have a stock price that goes up and
down to tell you how you're doing. This lack of a natural feedback loop
means that we as a foundation have to be even more careful in picking
our goals and being honest with ourselves when we are not achieving
them."
Washington
Post: "Jewish
Charities Scramble to Cover Losses to Trader"
In December, "about three
dozen of the biggest Jewish foundations in the country convened an
emergency meeting to come up with a plan to anonymously help the Jewish
nonprofits that fell victim to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme that Wall
Street trader Bernard L. Madoff is charged with operating, and to try
to restore the community's faith in its values, said organizers of the
meeting." Thankfully, the Jewish Community Foundation
of San Diego had very minimal exposure to the
Madoff funds. Click here for a roundup of related articles
on Madoff's impact.
WSJ: "The
Philanthropy Shakedown"
This op-ed decries The Greenlining Institute's
efforts to require Florida foundations to track diversity
data.

Resources
COF Report on Donor-Advised Funds
This new report (pdf), based on survey
findings, reveals that these funds comprise a third of community
foundation assets yet make up 62% of annual grants, and have a
payout rate that is three times that of other funds.
New Website:
More for Mission Resource Center
Mission investing - seeking opportunities to align a foundation's
investments with the mission of the organization - is an important
strategy for foundations participating in the More for Mission
Campaign. Formerly known as the 2% Campaign, the More for Mission Campaign
has developed a Resource Center based at the Boston College
Institute for Responsible Investment, to help foundations leverage
their endowments through investments that support the foundations'
broader missions without compromising their endowments' financial
success. Click here for a related article.
Report: The Social and
Economic Value of Private and Community Foundations
This report (pdf) is from The Philanthropic
Collaborative, a new organization seeking to educate federal and state
policymakers about the critical benefits of philanthropic dollars in
communities across the nation. Click here for a related WSJ article.
