"To give away money is an easy matter in any man’s power. But to decide to whom to give it, and how much and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every man’s power, nor an easy matter." -- Aristotle

Charitable Reform Update
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (HR 4) carries significant implications and regulations for grantmakers -- particularly community foundations/donor advised funds and those private foundations giving to supporting organizations. Thorough coverage and analysis of this is available at the Council on Foudations website . In fact, the Frequently Asked Questions document alone is 20 pages long -- which shows you how complex this legislation is! If you would like the SDG staff to research specific aspects of the bill, please let us know and we will be in touch with our colleagues at the Council on Foundations to help you in any way we can.
Community Foundation News
Community Foundations have made a lot of headlines recently. The Foundation Center released a report on September 19 showing that estimated giving by the country's seven hundred community foundations rose 10.9% to $3.2 billion in 2005. This growth was twice as fast as that of independent and corporate foundations. Read or download the report here.
The Council on Foundations released its own study of 165 community foundations on September 18 and found that the average community foundation produced a 7 percent return on its investments in 2005, exceeding national trends for investment returns overall. Click here for more information.
Measuring San Diego's Nonprofit Sector
The USD Center for Applied Nonprofit Research presents a free event, "A Spotlight on San Diego's Third Sector," to share the findings of a report on the San Diego nonprofit sector's impact and capacity (the report was sponsored by SDG members The San Diego Foundation and The Westreich Foundation as well as The Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation).

Google's Philanthropy
Google.org, the Google philanthropic arm, is already making waves. The New York Times featured an article on September 13 about its unusual approach: "The ambitious founders of Google, the popular search engine company, have set up a philanthropy, giving it seed money of about $1 billion and a mandate to tackle poverty, disease and global warming. But unlike most charities, this one will be for-profit, allowing it to fund start-up companies, form partnerships with venture capitalists and even lobby Congress. It will also pay taxes."
Another article, discussed in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, compares Google's philanthropy to that of the Gates Foundation: "Just as Google is seen as more dashing than Microsoft in the world of software, so too does Google’s new corporate charity, Google.org, seem more innovative than the Microsoft chairman’s Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, says Daniel Gross, a columnist for Slate."

The Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) is pleased to announce the availability of the seventh-annual Excellence in Corporate Philanthropy Awards applications. Online Grantmaking Tools
Philanthropy Northwest, SDG's counterpart in Seattle, recently featured an article about online grantmaking tools in their newsletter. In it, consultant Anne Green discusses how donors can now use systems like Foundation Source, Brommelkamp, and MicroEdge (Click here for SDG member discount information) to manage grantmaking through technology. Some highlights:
- These tools can handle administrative aspects of grantmaking (grants management, compliance, tax filings) as well as streamline internal decision-making processes by allowing instant online access to information.
- Community foundations are also using web-based technology to allow donors to make and track grants--and even search for potential grantees.
- Philanthropy expert Andrew Blau calls for foundations to increase their use of technology for accountability and transparency purposes.
- While online tools can be expensive ($5,000 to $250,000), there is a wide range of services out there--most likely one in your price range!
