Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Supplement
For a second year, San Diego Business Journal, San Diego Grantmakers, and Volunteer San Diego have
worked together to produce this special supplement on local corporate
philanthropy.
Published on November 17, 2008,
the piece highlights the importance of corporate philanthropy during
the economic downturn, discusses the contributions of current corporate
giving and employee volunteer programs, and provides information about
how more companies can get involved.
The objective of this year's
supplement was to create a handy basic reference guide to businesses
that either are starting or improving their giving and volunteerism
programs.

(very large pdf), click here. If you would
like to receive a hard copy, contact us.

since March, so it contains a wealth of economy-related resources and
news headlines, as well as information about SDG programs. Here
is a sample of corporate-related resources and news:
Corporate Giving in a Tough
Economy: 5 Reasons Why
Sure, when the economy's down, you get more prudent about expenditures.
But when you're looking for places to trim, corporate giving shouldn't
be the first place to whack. Here are five reasons why you should
continue to support nonprofit organizations during tough times.
Does the current economic
downturn spell the end of corporate citizenship? Just the opposite,
says a recent survey of the Center's members. Half of the practitioners
surveyed (out of 50 total) believe that instead of falling by the
wayside as corporate budgets get slashed - corporate citizenship will
instead become more critical to corporate reputation and business
success.
This BCCCC blog post notes
that we are "at a crossroads for capitalism and corporate
citizenship."
"Consumers Expect
Companies to Keep Giving in Hard Times" The
Chronicle of Philanthropy summarizes a new survey on consumer
expectations during a poor economy
"Corporate
Philanthropy in Changing Economies"
This
past summer NCG's Corporate Philanthropy
Institute explored how the current economic conditions could impact
corporate philanthropy and citizenship. The program resource page includes
articles, program materials, and audio of the
keynote address.

Query:
Policies Regarding Nonprofit Board Service?
A corporate member of one of SDG's colleague organizations is trying to
establish criteria for employees/CEOs serving on nonprofit and
foundation boards in order to develop a policy. They are
considering issues such as the organization's mission, location, scope
of services, connectivity to the goals of the
corporation, financial stability, and governance structure. Has
your company dealt with this issue? Please contact us
with any thoughts or recommendations.

why.
PND:
Corporate Donors Turning to 'Strategic Philanthropy'

than donate directly to specific charities, corporate donors are
increasingly choosing to give to projects in which they can be actively
involved and that align strategically with components of their

Charts: Corporate Communicators Want to Boost CSR, Split Over Reasons
Why
Communications
professionals from around the world want to raise the profile of their
organizations' corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts by beefing
up communications and backing stand-alone CSR departments, according to
a poll by Ragan Communications and PollStream.
Respondents were conflicted, however, about why they want to increase
CSR activities and where a CSR department should reside within their
organization.
CSRWire: CSR Emerging as Governance Issue for Boards
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is directly linked to a firm's
future and needs to be elevated to the board level as a governance
issue. A new Conference Board of Canada report introduces a "CSR
Governance Road Map" to help boards integrate social and
environmental issues as part of their oversight, strategic direction
and reporting.

Giving
Net: Redefining CSR
This article argues that
"Old CSR is deficit-driven. It is about protecting your
reputation. New CSR puts market forces behind social innovations.
New CSR suggests that nonprofits and foundations can begin to
strategize about ways to align business strategy, company skills and
market needs with philanthropic needs. There is no limit to the
creativity possible with this as a starting point."
J.K. Group Corporate
Philanthropy Services
This company offers

potential members that fundraising or marketing is not allowed at any
